HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Omaha women's basketball program dropped a hard-fought game to VCU, 74-66, at the Southern Miss Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic Friday evening.
Omaha (2-5) was led by three double-digit scorers while the Rams (3-3) also had three who notched double figures.
LEADERS FOR OMAHA
Claire Killian led the way with a team-high 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 from three.
Mikaela Ekdahl had 12 points while
Ella Ogier rounded out the double-digit scoring with 11 points.
LEADERS FOR VCU
Danielle Hammond had a game-high 22 points. Tera Reed and Sydnei Archie also had double-digit scoring efforts with 12 points apiece.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Omaha shot 45.8% from the field on 22-of-48. The Mavericks were also 50% from beyond the arc (9-of-18) and went 81.3% from the charity stripe (13-of-16). VCU was 50% from the field on 25-of-50 shooting. The Rams went just 4-of-6 from three (66.7%) and 71.4% from the free throw line (20-of-28). Omaha outrebounded the Rams 28-27, but VCU won the turnover battle as the Mavericks committed 21 to the Rams' 14.
INSIDE THE FIRST HALF
A quick 7-2 VCU run put Omaha in an early hole. The Mavericks, however, rallied back and cut the deficit to five after the first quarter (17-12). In the second, Omaha outscored the Rams 19-11. An
Abby Johnson three tied it up at 17-all at the 7:24 mark in the quarter. The Maverick run continued as the team built its largest lead of the game (28-21) after an Ekdahl three. At halftime, Omaha held on to a 31-28 lead.
INSIDE THE SECOND HALF
VCU was able to surge in the third quarter and regained the lead on a 6-0 run at the 2:11 mark in the third quarter (45-43). That run extended to 14-0 and the Mavericks were held scoreless in the last 4:35 of the third quarter. After three, Omaha trailed 55-45. The VCU lead extended to 15 (60-45) at the 8:37 mark in the fourth. Despite a late Maverick run, the Rams held on for the 74-66 victory.
