Trio of Goals Propel Mavericks Past Western Illinois

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's soccer team scored a season-high three goals in a 3-1 victory over Western Illinois in the Summit League opener on Saturday night at Caniglia Field.
 
The Mavericks improve to 2-6-2 overall and 1-0 in conference action while the Leathernecks drop to 0-11-0 (0-1-0) on the season.

How It Happened
  • Gonzalo Ledesma passed the ball down the right side where Cole Nelson chipped a cross into the box for a crashing Aaron Uribe to head in his team-leading third goal of the season in the 20th minute.
  • The Mavericks nearly doubled the lead in the 34th minute, but Marcos Bautista's shot blasted off the right woodwork.
  • Martin Veys sent the ball past the Leatherneck defense towards Andreas Hermansson whose first attempt deflected off the WIU keeper, but the freshman collected the rebound and found the back of the net to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead in the 60th minute.
  • The Leathernecks trimmed the deficit in half in the 62nd minute with their lone goal of the match.
  • Veys volleyed the ball forward to Miguel Gomez in the 84th minute where the junior blasted the ball into the upper right shelf of the net.

  • Omaha outshot the Leathernecks 9-8 in the win while Western Illinois clipped the Mavericks 4-2 in corner kicks.
  • Uribe's goal marks the team-leading third goal of the season for the transfer.
