Bulldogs Hold Off Mavericks, 3-1

DULUTH, Minn. – No. 5 Minnesota Duluth held off a furious rally by the Omaha hockey team in the third period to post a 3-1 win on Saturday night at AMSOIL Arena.

The Bulldogs swept the only series of the season between the teams, improving to 16-6-2 overall and 9-4-1-0/0 in the NCHC, good for second place.  The Mavericks fell to 7-15-2 overall and 3-10-1-0/1 in the conference, putting them in eighth place.

Trailing 2-0 into the third, the Mavericks got on the board at 5:48.  Fredrik Olofsson deflected home a shot by Zach Jordan for his eighth goal of the year.  The power play goal was the second of the weekend for the Mavericks against the nation's top penalty kill.

But UMD got an insurance goal from Parker Mackay at 16:27 to boost its lead to 3-1 and then held off the Mavericks down the stretch after UNO pulled goalie Evan Weninger for an extra attacker.

Weninger was sterling in goal, making 49 saves as the Bulldogs outshot the Mavericks, 52-34.  UMD's Hunter Shepard was sharp when the Bulldogs needed him.  He made 33 saves including 12 in the third period.

The Bulldogs struck first for the second night in a row, getting a goal from Dylan Samberg just after the Mavericks had killed off a UMD power play.  The goal, at 5:24 of the second, was Samberg's second of the weekend.

UMD doubled its lead later when Kobe Bender knocked in the rebound of a shot by Cole Koepke at 11:57.

The lead for the Bulldogs could have been larger, but Weninger was acrobatic in goal, turning aside 24 of 26 shots in the period.

The Mavericks return home to host Western Michigan on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 1-2.  Both games begin at 7:07 p.m.
