Men's Soccer Picks Up 4-1 Win at Purdue Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Diego Gutierrez scored two first-half goals as the Omaha men's soccer team snapped a two-match losing streak with a 4-1 victory against Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday night at the Hefner Soccer Complex.

The Mavericks improved to 2-5 (1-1 Summit League) on the year, while the Mastodons dropped to 6-4 (0-1).

Gutierrez put Omaha in front in the 24th minute.  Gutierrez gathered a loose ball just outside the penalty area then took a couple of touches before firing a shot into the upper right corner of the goal.

The Mavericks extended their lead just before the break.  Marcos Bautista split a pair of Mastodon defenders with a pass that found Gutierrez.  Gutierrez then beat a defender and goalkeeper Tor Erik Larsen before slotting his shot inside the near post for a 2-0 lead.

Omaha came out of the break and immediately put the offensive pressure on the Mastodons.  Gutierrez ran down Match Hammer's clearance on the left side of the pitch.  After cutting the ball towards the center of the field, Gutierrez found a wide-open Martin Veys who tucked his right-footed shot inside the near post to make it 3-0.

The Mavericks pushed their lead to 4-0 in the 63rd minute on a goal by Marcos Bautista.  Denzel Woods controlled the ball just inside Omaha's attacking half of the field before slotting a pass towards the top of the 18-yard box.  Bautista settled the pass before slipping a shot into the lower right corner for his first goal as a Maverick.

Purdue Fort Wayne's Matthew Lieshout converted a penalty kick in the 68th minute to make the final score 4-1.
