OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's soccer team dropped its Summit League opener to No. 4 Denver on Saturday at Caniglia Field.
With the loss, the Mavericks are now 1-5 on the season (0-1 Summit League), while the Pioneers move to 7-0-1 (1-0).
Denver's Andre Shinyashiki struck for the game-winner in the 79th minute. Callum Stretch sent a pass from midfield to Shinyashiki running through the middle of the box. He then one-touched the ball inside the far post for the final goal of the match.
Omaha's
Diego Gutierrez scored the game's opening goal in the 30th minute. Gutierrez beat a Pioneer defender on the end line before hitting a right-footed shot that found the upper corner of the near post to put the Mavericks up 1-0.
UNO's
Seth Rinderknecht then received a straight red card in the 36th minute forcing the Mavericks to play a man down the remainder of the match.
Omaha made it a 2-0 game early in the second half. Gutierrez sent a corner kick into the box, and Billy Hoffman headed the ball from the center of the six-yard box that ended up in the back of the net.
Denver then scored twice in 1:29 to level the match. Shinyashiki's first goal came in the 49th minute off a pass from Kenny Akamatsu. Scott DeVoss then played a long ball that found Shinyashiki inside the penalty area for his second goal.
The senior added his third goal in the 54th minute to put Denver in front 3-2. Stretch and Shae Smalley each recorded assists on the play.
Omaha tied the match at 3-3 in the 78th minute. Gutierrez fired a shot that was deflected by Denver goalkeeper Nick Gardner. The deflection landed at the feet of
Martin Veys who tapped in the equalizer.
