LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Omaha men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 11 UCLA on Wednesday night at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.
With the loss, the Mavericks are now 1-4 on the season, while the Bruins improved to 4-1.
In the first half, UCLA out shot Omaha 7-1, but neither team had a shot on goal. Omaha's lone shot of the period came shortly after kickoff when
Martin Veys launched a shot that went over the crossbar.
Diego Gutierrez gave Omaha the lead with a goal in the 54th minute. UCLA's Erik Holt yellow card resulted in a Maverick free kick just outside the penalty area. Gutierrez lined up the kick and sent his shot past Bruin goalkeeper Cole Martinez.
UCLA scored the equalizer in the 65th minute. A Matt Hundley shot deflected off goalkeeper
Ugo Tritz to the feet of Santiago Herrera who gathered the loose ball and fired it into the back of the net.
The Bruins took the lead in the 76th minute. Matthew Powell out jumped a pair of Omaha defenders and headed home a Hundley corner kick to give UCLA a 2-1 advantage.
The Turning Point
Omaha had a chance to level in the 82nd minute, but Gutierrez's shot hit the post.
