FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The Omaha baseball team dropped its series finale at Fort Wayne Saturday afternoon, 5-0 at Mastodon Field. The Mavericks are now 13-22 (8-7 Summit League), while Fort Wayne improves to 9-24 (5-13).
Chase Phelps (1-1) picked up the win, allowing one hit over 7.2 innings with three walks and six strikeouts.
Jake Pennington (2-6) took the loss in his start, surrendering five runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk with one strikeout in 2.0 innings.
Cal Hehnke threw 6.0 shutout innings in relief, allowing two hits with no walks and fanning five. After Fort Wayne registered a leadoff single in the fifth, Hehnke retired the next 11 straight Mastodon hitters to complete his outing.
Braden Rogers had Omaha's only hit of the day with an infield single in the seventh.
A five-run third inning was all the offense Fort Wayne needed for the day. After loading the bases on two singles and an error, Mike Snyder cleared them with a double to left center. A fielding error put runners on the corners for Shannon Baker, whose single to left plated another run. Brock Logan then reached on a third Maverick miscue, which allowed the fifth and final run of the inning to cross for a 5-0 score.
The Mavericks stranded seven runners on the afternoon.
Omaha returns to action on Wednesday, April 25, hosting Kansas State at Werner Park at 6:35 p.m. Links to live stats and audio will be available on OMavs.com.
