OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha baseball team dropped its series finale with South Dakota State Saturday afternoon, 6-2 at Seymour Smith Park.
The Mavericks are now 11-15 (7-2 Summit League) on the season, while SDSU improves to 4-19 (2-5).
Tyler Olmstead (2-1) earned the win, throwing 6.0 innings in his start and limiting Omaha to two hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts.
Jake Pennington (2-4) took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and five walks with two strikeouts over 4.0 innings.
The game sat in a scoreless tie until the top of the fourth, when South Dakota State put up three runs on three hits and an error. Anthony Schneider singled in Gus Steiger for the Jacks' first run of the day, and Newt Johnson drove in Schneider with another RBI single. Johnson then stole second, and an errant throw on the play allowed Tony Kjolsing to score for a 3-0 margin.
SDSU added another run in the fifth, loading the bases before Schneider was hit by a pitch to bring in Logan Holtz. In the sixth, Johnson came in via a Holtz RBI double for a 5-0 advantage.
The top of the ninth saw the Jacks grow their lead to 6-0 with a Kjolsing sacrifice fly that plated Phil Velez.
Omaha surged in the bottom half of the inning to avoid the shutout, and the first five Mavericks reached base. Omaha loaded the bags on walks from
Henry Wittren and
Cole Thibodeau and a
Max Gamm single up the middle, which prompted an SDSU call to the bullpen.
Thomas DeBonville then singled to center to drive in Wittren for the Mavericks' first run, and
Tyler Daugherty singled down the right field line to plate Gamm, cutting it to 6-2. With the tying run at the plate, SDSU reliever Brett Mogen retired the next three batters with a pair of strikeouts to end it.
Omaha turns its attention to non-conference action this Tuesday, April 2, welcoming Nebraska for its first of four games at Werner Park. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m., and links to live stats and audio will be available on OMavs.com.
