Huskies Finish Sweep of Mavericks, 7-1

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 2/1 St. Cloud State scored six unanswered goals to break a 1-1 tie and beat the Omaha hockey team, 7-1, on Saturday night.

The Huskies earned the sweep of the Mavericks after winning 2-0 on Friday.  Omaha fell to 4-10-2 overall and 2-5-1-0/1 in the NCHC while the Huskies improved to 13-1-2 overall and a conference-best 6-0-2-0/1.

Just as in the series opener, the Huskies scored early in the first period.  Blake Lizotte stole the puck and fired the puck past Evan Weninger just 1:19 into the game.

The Mavericks tied the game at 5:03 of the second period when Zach Jordan roofed a pass from Tyler Weiss for his fifth goal of the season.  It was Weiss' first collegiate point, and Weninger earned the second assist on the goal.

But the Huskies retook the lead just 35 seconds later when Robbie Jackson scored from the left faceoff circle.  It started an offensive onslaught for SCSU which got tallies from Jack Ahcan and Easton Brodzinski to make it 4-1 after two.

Patrick Newell scored a power play goal early in the third, Blake Lizotte picked up his second of the night, and Kevin Fitzgerald scored late for the final score.

Weninger stopped 30 shots while SCSU's David Hrenak made 20 saves as the Huskies outshot the Mavericks, 37-21.

The Mavericks are off until hosting Alaska Anchorage on Saturday and Monday, Dec. 29 and 31.

Three Stars:  1. Blake Lizotte/SCSU – Two goals; 2. Nick Poehling/SCSU – Two assists; 3. Patrick Newell/SCSU – One goal, one assist
