OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's basketball team closed its first weekend of league play Sunday afternoon, falling 71-56 to Oral Roberts at Baxter Arena. The Mavericks are now 5-9 (0-2 Summit League) on the year, while the Golden Eagles improved to 8-6 (1-0).
Leaders for Omaha
Junior guard
Rayanna Carter paced the Mavericks with a career-high 19 points, hitting 7-of-14 from the floor. Sophomore guard
Claire Killian added 15 points with three 3-pointers, as well as four rebounds and three assists.
Freshman forward
Josie Filer had eight points and eight rebounds, while freshman center
Elena Pilakouta chipped in seven points and six rebounds.
Leaders for Oral Roberts
Rylie Torrey led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 17 points, hitting 5-of-8 from 3-point range. Maya Mayberry chipped in 13 points and four steals.
Regan Schumacher has 12 points, converting 5-of-5 shots from the floor, while Jordan Gilbert added 10 points, five assists and four rebounds.
Team Stats
Omaha hit 38.5 percent (20-52) from the floor, including a 26.7 percent (4-15) effort from 3-point range. UNO converted 75 percent (12-16) of its free throws. The Mavericks held a 33-29 advantage on the boards.
Oral Roberts hit 49.0 percent (24-49) from the field, including 37.0 percent (10-27) from distance. ORU finished 72.2 percent (13-18) at the free throw line. The Golden Eagles held an 18-12 edge in assists and forced the Mavericks into 19 turnovers while committing 14.
Inside the First Half
Oral Roberts opened the game with a quick 7-3 spurt before a 6-2 Omaha run tied the game at 9-9 with 5:50 left in the first quarter. The Golden Eagles closed the quarter on a 9-2 run to lead 20-11 at the end of the first period.
Carter sparked a 9-0 Maverick run to open the second quarter as Omaha tied the game at 20-20. ORU responded with a 6-0 run of its own to regain the lead. Carter and Filer combined to score the games next nine points as UNO took its first lead of the game at 29-26 with less than two minutes remaining in the first half.
Sophie Johnston's 3-pointer in the final minute put the Mavericks ahead 32-30 at halftime.
Inside the Second Half
Omaha stretched its lead to 38-32 in the opening minutes of the second half. The Mavericks were held scoreless over the next 4:05 as the Golden Eagles took a 46-38 lead. ORU closed out the third quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers form Mayberry and Torrey and led 55-44 heading into the final quarter.
Oral Roberts led by double figures the rest of the way, as Omaha never brought it under 10. Killian scored eight points in the fourth quarter as the Golden Eagles came away with a 71-56 victory.
