Mavericks Tie Tigers, 3-3; Gain Extra Point In Shootout

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha hockey team played Colorado College to a 3-3 tie but came away with a sudden-death shootout win to earn an extra NCHC standings point on Friday evening at Baxter Arena.

Mason Morelli scored a goal in regulation and had the deciding goal in the shootout for the Mavericks who had a 2-0 lead but had to come from a goal down to tie the game late in the third period.  Morelli also had an assist while freshman Taylor Ward led all players with three assists.

With the official tie following the first overtime, the Mavericks are now to 4-7-2 overall and 2-2-1-1/1 in NCHC play. Colorado College fell to 5-6-2 and 1-5-1-0/1 in conference action.

Omaha struck first at the 5:41 mark of the opening period when Riley Alferd netted his second goal of the season off a one-timer in the slot.

Just 4:10 later, the Mavericks made the lead 2-0 when Morelli finished a tic-tac-toe play by burying a pass from Ward for a power play goal.  Fredrik Olofsson had the other assist.

The Mavericks found themselves on the penalty kill late in the first, and Colorado College cut the deficit to one. Shortly after a shot nailed the pipe, the Tigers' Mason Bergh scored his fourth of the season with 1:54 remaining. That goal snapped Omaha's streak of 20- straight penalty kills.

Just under three minutes into the third, Colorado Collage evened the game when Erik Middendorf snuck a shot past Weninger to make it 2-2.

Omaha gave up the go-ahead goal at 11:46.  Teemu Pulkkinen was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for checking from behind. on the ensuing five-minute power play, Troy Conzo fired a one-timer in the slot that banked in off the post.

Omaha evened the game late when Olofsson's pushed home the rebound of a shot by Morelli who had muscled the puck on goal with a CC defenseman draped on him.  After a video review for goaltender interference, the goal was confirmed, forcing overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime, CC's Mason Bergh picked up a two-minute hooking penalty in the 3-on-3 overtime, but the Mavericks could not convert, forcing the sudden-death shootout.

Morelli put the Mavericks up one after he beat goaltender Alex Leclerc with a snapshot, top shelf. Weninger then stopped CC's Christiano Versich, giving Omaha the extra point in sudden death.
