Second Half Rally Pushes Women's Basketball Past Detroit Mercy


DETROIT, Mich. – The Omaha women's basketball team outscored Detroit Mercy in the second half, 34-18, in a come-from-behind, 51-42, victory on Thursday morning at Calihan Hall.

With the win, the Mavericks improved to 3-3 on the season, while the Titans fell to 2-5.

Leaders for Omaha
Elena Pilakouta led the Mavericks with her first career double-double, finishing with 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.  Pilakouta also had a game-high four assists and four blocked shots.

Rayanna Carter scored 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the floor, including a pair of three-pointers.  Andi Pierce chipped in nine points and three boards.

Leaders for Detroit Mercy
Brittney Jackson led the Titans with nine points on 3-of-10 shooting.  Zoey Oatis and Lexey Tobel each added eight points.  Oatis added five rebounds, five steals and two assists, while Tobel chipped in eight rebounds and a blocked shot.

Team Stats
Omaha shot 51.3 percent (20-of-39) from the field while holding Detroit Mercy to 28.8 percent (17-of-59).  The Mavericks connected on 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from behind the three-point line compared to the Titans' 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from long range.  UNO shot 40.0 percent (4-of-10) at the free throw line, while UDM hit 50.0 percent (2-of-4).

Omaha held a 35-28 advantage in rebounding, including a 29-14 advantage on the defensive glass.  The Mavericks committed a season-high 23 turnovers, while the Titans committed 13.

Inside the First Half
Omaha trailed 9-4 at the first quarter media timeout but responded with a 7-3 run to close within a point with under two minutes left. Detroit Mercy's Jess Bicknell jumper made the score 14-11 to close out the opening 10 minutes of play.

A pair of Tobel three-pointers sparked an 8-0 run by Detroit Mercy to open the second quarter.  Six straight points from Pilakouta helped the Mavericks cut the lead to five with 4:28 remaining in the first half.  Omaha did not score the final 4:28 of the half as Detroit Mercy took a 24-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Inside the Second Half
The second half was a different story, as the Mavericks outscored the Titans 21-8 in the third quarter.  Carter and Sophie Johnston each hit three-pointers for Omaha to open the second half.  Back-to-back jumpers by Pilakouta and Claire Killian tied the game at 29-29 with 6:34 remaining.  Pierce's three-pointer gave UNO its first lead of the game at 32-31.  UDM briefly retook the lead on a Bicknell jumper.  Mariah Murdie scored the final four points of the period as Omaha held a 38-33 edge heading into the fourth quarter. 

Omaha stretched its lead to seven with 7:16 left in the fourth quarter.  Detroit Mercy made a final push and cut the lead to four on a Jackson three-pointer.  The Mavericks answered with a Carter three followed up by a Filer layup to stretch the lead to 49-40.  UNO then held Detroit Mercy scoreless the final 3:35 to seal the 51-42 victory.
