Women’s Basketball Falls to Campbell in FIU Thanksgiving Invite

MIAMI, Fla. – The Omaha women's basketball team lost 65-52 to Campbell in the FIU Thanksgiving Invitational at the Oceans Bank Convocation Center on Friday.

The loss dropped the Mavericks to 1-3 on the season, while the Camels moved to 4-1.

Leaders for Omaha
Freshman Josie Filer led two scorers in double-figures with her first career double-double, finishing with career highs of 12 points and 10 rebounds on 4-of-9 shooting.

Freshman Elena Pilakouta followed with 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and a block.  Freshman Mariah Murdie added six points, two steals, a rebound and an assist.

Leaders for Campbell
Taya Bolden had a double-double to lead the Camels, finishing with 12 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.  Kyra Davis scored a game-high 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting and grabbed six rebounds.

Team Stats
Omaha shot .354 (17-of-48) from the floor, while Campbell shot .377 (23-of-61).  The Mavericks connected on .571 (4-of-7) from three-point range, compared to just .296 (8-of-27) by the Camels.  UNO hit .667 (14-of-21) from the free throw line, while CU finished at .688 (11-of-16).

Campbell outrebounded Omaha 44-32, but the Mavericks outscored them 22-18 in the paint.

Inside the First Half
Omaha got off to a strong start in the opening quarter with a 7-0 run via layups from Filer and junior Rayanna Carter and a three-pointer from freshman Sophie Johnston.  Campbell began to battle back answering with a 6-1 spurt of its own to cut the lead to 8-6 midway through the period.  The two teams battled back and forth throughout the remainder of the frame with the Camels taking a 16-15 edge into the second quarter.

After a CU free throw to open the quarter, Filer sparked a 7-0 run with a layup and a trey to put Omaha in from 22-17 with 7:30 remaining.  Campbell chipped away at the Omaha lead and took a 26-24 lead on a Lauren Carter three-pointer with 28 seconds left in the first half.  Filer then drained her second trey of the quarter at the buzzer to give the Mavericks a 27-26 lead at the break.

Inside the Second Half
Campbell began to create separation early in the second half as Bolden and Carter combined to push the Camels ahead 34-29.  The Mavericks closed within two points at 39-37 with 2:21 remaining in the period, but Luana Serranho hit three free throws that swung momentum back to CU.  The two teams exchanged free throws to close out the quarter with Campbell holding a 46-41 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

The Camels opened the fourth with a 15-3 run to seize control at 61-43 with 5:05 left in the period.  A three-point play from Murdie made the final 65-52.
