Women's Basketball Heads to Florida International Tourney

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's basketball team returns to action this weekend at the Florida International Tournament in Miami.  The Mavericks open the tournament on Friday, Nov. 23 against Campbell at 1 p.m. (CT), and conclude tournament play against either Florida International or Florida A&M on Sunday.

From the Baseline
  • Omaha lost 64-52 to CSUN Friday evening at Baxter Arena.
  • Claire Killian scored a team-high 12 points and had two blocks and two steals.
  • Josie Filer added 11 points, eight boards, three assists two blocks and two steals.
  • Sophie Johnston chipped in 11 points, four boards and three assists.
  • Omaha's starting lineup has featured one returner and four new players, including three freshmen.

Scouting the Omaha Mavericks
Omaha is 1-2 on the season after dropping its last two decisions.  Last Friday, the Mavericks lost a 64-52 decision to CSUN at Baxter Arena.

Claire Killian leads the Mavericks with 10.0 points and 2.0 steals per game.  Josie Filer is the leading rebounder, averaging 6.7 boards per game.  Filer also averages 7.0 points, 1.7 assists and 1.0 block per game.  Sophie Johnston and Elena Pilakouta average 9.3 and 9.0 points per game, respectively.  Johnston adds 4.7 boards per game, while Pilakouta tacks on 5.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 blocks per contest.

Omaha is averaging 64.7 points through three games.  The Mavericks are shooting 37.8 percent (71-of-188) from the floor, 26.7 percent (16-of-60) from three-point range and 72.0 percent (36-of-50) from the free throw line.  The opposition averages 64.7 points on 39.7 percent (71-of-179) shooting from the floor, 31.9 percent (22-of-69) from long range and 60.0 percent (30-of-50) at the line.

Scouting the Campbell Camels
  • Campbell is 3-1 after picking up a 57-49 victory over Norfolk State in Norfolk, Va. on Tuesday.
  • The Camels average 61.3 points per game while allowing 58.5 points.
  • Kyra Davis averages 10.8 points per game to lead CU.
  • Davis and Taya Bolden each average 6.3 boards per game.
  • The Camels return three starters and 10 letterwinners from last season's 15-15 team that finished sixth in the Big South.
  • The Preseason Big South Poll picked Campbell to finish fifth.
  • Head coach Ronny Fisher is in his third year at Campbell with a record of 29-26 and a 136-170 mark in 11 seasons.

Friday is the first all-time meeting between the two programs.

Scouting the Florida International Panthers
  • Florida International is 0-5 after dropping a 68-57 decision to Bethune-Cookman in Dayton Beach, Fla. on Tuesday.
  • The Panthers average 56.4 points per game while giving up 79.0 points.
  • Chelsea Guimaraes lreads averages 11.2 points per game to lead the team.
  • Ce'Nara Skanes pulls down a team-best 5.6 rebound per game.
  • The Panthers return three letterwinners from last season.
  • The Preseason C-USA Poll picked FIU to finish 14 after an 8-21 mark in 2017-18.
  • Head coach Tiara Malcom is in her third season at Florida International with a record of 13-50.

History
The all-time series between Omaha and Florida International is tied 1-1.  In the last meeting, FIU defeated UNO 72-60 in Miami on Jan. 2, 1984.

Scouting the Florida A&M Rattlers
  • Florida A&M is 0-3 after dropping a 96-31 decision to No. 12 Tennessee on Monday.
  • The Rattlers average 38.3 points per game while giving up 74.0.
  • Mya Moye averages 11.3 points to lead FAMU, while Jasmine Ballew is the leading rebounder with 5.3 boards per game.
  • The Rattlers return two letterwinners from last season.
  • FAMU were predicted to finish eighth in the MEAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Head coach LeDawn Gibson is in her 11th season with the Rattlers and has a 142-167 career record.

History
Omaha leads the all-time series with Florida A&M 2-0.  The Mavericks topped the Rattlers 78-73 at Sapp Fieldhouse on No. 19, 2017.
