OMAHA, Neb. – Freshman
Kiana Dualan scored twice as the Omaha women's soccer team defeated Western Illinois 2-1 in its final regular season Summit League match on Sunday at Caniglia Field.
With the win and a North Dakota loss at South Dakota, the Mavericks clinched the final spot in The Summit League tournament. The postseason berth is Omaha's first in the NCAA Division I Era. UNO finished the regular season with a 7-10-2 overall record and 4-3-1 in league play.
Omaha scored the game's first goal in the closing seconds of the first half.
Andrea Daves played a ball down the left flank to
Hannah Heinemann. Heinemann gathered the pass and lofted a cross into the penalty area where Dualan out-jumped a Western Illinois defender and knocked the ball into the near post to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead at the half.
Western Illinois scored the equalizer in the 57th minute on an unassisted goal.
Erinoelle Clifton cleared Natalie Sielaff's shot off the line, but Jenna Lundgren gathered the clearance and poked in a shot to make the score 1-1.
The Mavericks netted the game-winner in the 61st minute. Western Illinois goalkeeper Ines Palmiero-Herrera misplayed a ball in the penalty area, which rolled to Dualan who placed her shot into a wide-open goal for the game-winner.
