TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State scored three third-period goals to pull away for a 6-3 win over the Omaha hockey team on Friday night at Oceanside Ice Arena.
The loss kept the Mavericks without a win this season, dropping them to 0-4-1, while the Sun Devils improved to 5-2-0, the best start in their short history.
Leading 3-2 entering the third period, Brinson Pasichnuk scored off a booming shot during a power play at 2:01.
Dylan Hollman add a goal off a netmouth scramble just 1:50 later to make it 5-2.
With the two teams skating four-on-four, the Mavericks got a breakaway goal from
Tristan Keck at 13:54 to draw to within two goals.
The Sun Devils iced the game when Anthony Croston scored his second goal of the night with 9.7 seconds remaining.
In spite of outshooting Arizona State and having eight power plays in the game, the Mavericks lost their fourth straight game.
Arizona State opened the scoring when Steenn Pasichnuk wristed home his first of the year at 3:10 of the first period.
UNO bounced back just 1:06 later while on a five-on-three power play.
Zach Jordan tipped home his team-leading third goal of the season at 4:16.
The Sun Devils retook the lead on a penalty shot goal by Croston at 6:21, but the Mavericks answered minutes later off the rush.
Dean Stewart collect the rebound of a shot by Keck and fired home his second of the year.
ASU again regained the lead on a power play at 12:33.
Evan Weninger stopped a long shot by PJ Marrocco, but Austin Lemieux knocked in the rebound to put the Sun Devils ahead after one.
Weninger made 34 saves while Daccord stopped 43 as the Mavericks fired a season-high 46 shots on goal.
The two teams finish the series on Saturday at 9:05 p.m. CT.
