OMAHA, Neb. – Diego Gutierrez scored twice to lead the Omaha men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Western Illinois on Saturday at the Northwest Playing Field in Macomb, Ill.
With the win, the Mavericks improved to 3-5-1 overall and 2-1 in Summit League action, while the Leathernecks dropped to 2-3-8 (0-2-1).
Omaha jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute with an unassisted goal. Gutierrez shook off a Western Illinois defender and tucked his shot into the bottom right corner.
The Mavericks added to their lead shortly after halftime. The Fighting Leathernecks' Tim Trilk ventured outside of the penalty area to play a ball with his feet. Gutierrez outraced Trilk to the ball and tapped his shot into the left side of the goal for a 2-0 Omaha lead.
Seth Rinderknecht earned an assist on the play.
Western Illinois made it a 2-1 match in the 63rd minute. Jonah Dancer scored on a shot from inside the penalty area for his first goal of the season. Paul Kirdorf was credited with the assist.
