GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The No. 18 Omaha hockey team broke open a tie game with two power play goals in the second period on its way to a 4-1 win over No. 6 North Dakota at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
The Mavericks have won three straight coming out of the Christmas break, improving to 10-8-1 overall and 3-6-0-0/0 in the NCHC. They are now tied with Minnesota Duluth for seventh. The Fighting Hawks, winless in their last three, are now 10-6-5 overall and 5-4-2-0/2 in the conference, keeping them in second.
With the game tied 1-1 after the first period, the Mavericks, who took the first lead on a goal by
Fredrik Olofsson at 10:44, got the lead back on a power play at 8:20.
Zach Jordan's shot from the right wing hit a crowd in front and dropped into the crease.
Luke Nogard poked it home for his sixth goal of the season.
The power play again paid dividends for the Mavericks less than four minutes later.
Tyler Vesel and
Ryan Jones combined to set up
David Pope for his patented one-timer that eluded Johnson for his team-leading 12th goal of the year and his NCHC-leading seventh power play goal.
The Mavericks added insurance in the third period. Jordan collected a turnover at the UNO blue line and raced the other way. His hard wrist shot beat Johnson over the glove hand for his ninth goal of the year to make it 4-1.
Evan Weninger, who allowed only a penalty shot goal to Shane Gersich at 17:23 of the first, stopped 34 shots to improve to 8-6-0. Johnson stopped 17 in the loss.
