Early Goals Propel Mavericks Past Utah Valley, 3-1

OREM, Utah – The Omaha men's soccer team captured a 3-1 win over Utah Valley on Sunday afternoon at Clyde Field.  The Mavericks moved to 7-1 on the season, while the Wolverines fell to 3-3.

Cole Nelson put the Mavericks on the board as he headed in a corner kick by Xavier Gomez in the third minute and Omaha took a 1-0 lead.

In the 11th minute, Elvir Ibisevic out jumped a pair of Utah Valley defenders and headed home a Gomez corner for his sixth goal of the year.

Late in the first half, Joseph Ghitis sent a long punt up the middle of the field that made it to Emmanuel Hamzat.  Hamzat slipped past a pair of Utah Valley defenders and tapped in the on-point pass with his right foot and pushed the Mavericks' lead to 3-0.

The Wolverines managed to get one back in the 54th minute after Connor Salmon's shot from 22-yards out deflected off the left post and into the goal.

In Their Words
Omaha head coach Jason Mims on how his team responded after their first loss:
"We came out with the right mentality after the loss.  We controlled the first half and put the game away with three excellent goals.  For us to show that kind of start to the game and be able to finish with a huge win, what a great feeling for the guys."

How Omaha handled the lead in the second half?
"The second half we were able to use some depth and defend well.  We knew Utah Valley was going to throw everything forward trying to get back into the game."

What did you take away from this game and the weekend?
"A characteristic of a great team is measured by the response to some adversity.  This weekend we were missing two starters while facing two tough teams, including a top 30 team on their home field.
