Mavericks Shut Out at No. 6 Louisville, 10-0

Box Score

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Sixth-ranked Louisville's Kade McClure tossed a one-hitter Saturday afternoon, as the Omaha baseball team was shut out 10-0 at Jim Patterson Stadium. The Mavericks are now 1-6 (0-0 Summit League), while the Cardinals improve to a perfect 6-0 (0-0 ACC).

McClure (1-0), an All-American, was perfect through 4.2 innings, as he retired 14 straight Mavericks and struck out eight of the first 12 he faced. McClure went 6.0 innings in the win, finishing with nine strikeouts to three walks. Junior right-hander Corey Binger (1-1) took the loss, lasting 4.0 innings and surrendering eight runs -- four earned -- on eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Louisville got multi-hit performances from Colby Fitch (2-for-4, two runs, one RBI), Brendan McKay (2-for-2, one run, one RBI) and Drew Ellis (2-for-3, one run, one RBI).

After the Cardinals were retired in order in the first, they punched home a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. McKay led off with a double to center and Ellis singled to left and advanced on the throw to put runners in scoring position. After Binger tallied his third strikeout, Devin Hairston reached on a fielder's choice to score McKay, and a Tyler Fitzgerald sacrifice fly to center brought in Ellis for a 2-0 advantage.

The Cardinals added two more runs on a pair of hits and an error in the third. A one-out single to right by Fitch and a walk by Devin Mann put two on for McKay, who immediately singled down the right field line, with a throwing error allowing Fitch to score. Ellis followed with a sacrifice fly to right, which plated Mann for a 4-0 lead.

UL had a big fourth inning, putting up four runs on four hits and an error. Back-to-back one-out singles by Fitzgerald and Ryan Summers, plus a four-pitch walk by Logan Taylor, loaded the bases for the Cardinals. Fitch's infield single drove in Fitzgerald, then Mann reached on a fielder's choice, and a throwing error on the play allowed Taylor and Summers to score. Louisville tacked on its last run with a sacrifice fly to right by McKay, which pushed Fitch across for an 8-0 advantage.

McClure did not allow a base runner until the fifth and registered eight strikeouts before redshirt freshman Andrew Hall drew a walk to spoil the perfect game. Sophomore Riley Herold then broke up McClure's no-hitter in the next at-bat, as he delivered Omaha's only hit of the day with a single to left. Louisville quickly culled the threat, however, ending it with a popup.

The Cardinals added another run in both the sixth and seventh innings, pushing into double-digit run territory. In the sixth, they loaded the bases, and Mann scored as Colin Lyman reached on a fielder's choice. And in the seventh, Jake Snider led off with a pinch-hit triple down the right field line, then scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Logan Wyatt, which extended the lead to the eventual final score of 10-0.

Omaha and Louisville will complete this weekend's series on Sunday, Feb. 26. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. CT at Jim Patterson Stadium, and the game will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra. Links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.
