Box Score FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- It was a game of scoring runs Saturday night, but the Omaha men's basketball team fell short in a 108-101 overtime loss to Fort Wayne at Gates Sports Center. The Mavericks are now 13-13 (6-7 Summit League), while the Mastodons improve to 17-9 (6-6).
Junior forward
Tre'Shawn Thurman led five double-figure scorers for the Mavericks, posting his team-leading sixth double-double of the season. The Omaha native exploded for team highs of 24 points and 14 rebounds, marking his fourth 20-point scoring effort this year.
Senior guard
Marcus Tyus added 19 points with three rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks, shooting 3-of-5 from deep and a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line. Sophomore forward
Mitch Hahn also canned a trio of 3-pointers to finish with 17 points, eight boards, an assist and a block.
Senior guard
Tra-Deon Hollins added 15 points with three more 3-pointers alongside three rebounds, a game-high seven assists and two steals. Sophomore guard
Zach Jackson rounded it out with 10 points, two caroms and two assists.
Fort Wayne, which celebrated Homecoming with a sellout crowd of 1,832, also had five scorers in double digits and got double-doubles from John Konchar (20 points/16 rebounds) and Brent Calhoun (17 points/11 rebounds). Mo Evans and Bryson Scott each scored a game-leading 25 points, and Kason Harrell added another 11.
As a team, Fort Wayne outshot Omaha 49.4 percent (39-of-79) to 42.1 percent (32-of-76) from the floor and 38.1 percent (16-of-42) to 33.3 percent (13-of-39) beyond the arc. The Mavericks had the edge at the free throw line, 82.8 percent (24-of-29) to 63.6 percent (14-of-22), and on the glass, 48-44.
The Mastodons opened the game to a 9-0 lead while Omaha went without a field goal until 16:40. The Mavericks trimmed the margin to eight when a 3-pointer by junior guard
Daniel Norl made it 24-16 with 12:03 to go, but Fort Wayne took its largest lead of 14 at 32-18 after a 3-pointer and a dunk from Konchar by 9:57. By the intermission, the Mastodons had secured a 50-39 lead.
Omaha crept back in the first six minutes of the second half, hitting 8-of-13 from the floor while Fort Wayne went 1-of-9. A Norl trey punctuated a 10-0 run and gave the Mavericks their first lead of the night, 57-55 with 14:13 to go. Omaha then surged ahead 76-67 with 8:23 remaining on a 3-pointer and a layup from Hollins on consecutive possessions, but Fort Wayne rattled off a 14-0 run, propelled by eight points from Scott, to go up 84-78 with 4:35 left.
With 3:02 to go, a Hollins three cut Fort Wayne's lead to 87-85, and after an Evans three pushed it back to a five-point deficit, the Mavericks found their momentum again. Tyus hit a pair of free throws and Jackson drained a three with 1:30 left, which tied the game once more at 90-90. After an Evans layup put Fort Wayne on top again, a Jackson putback on the other end knotted the game at 92-92 with 18 seconds to go, sending it to overtime.
Omaha opened the extra period with a pair of free throws from Thurman, but the Mastodons responded with a 10-0 push that made it 102-94 with 2:04 left. Fort Wayne shot 4-of-5 from the floor to Omaha's 1-of-9 over the last five minutes, clinching the win with a final score of 108-101.
