Mavericks Fall to Bulldogs, 6-2

OMAHA, Neb. – No. 17 Minnesota Duluth used a three-goal second period to pull away from the Omaha hockey team, winning 6-2 on Saturday night at Baxter Arena.

The Mavericks fell to 7-8-1 overall and 2-6-0-0/0 in the NCHC, putting them in eighth place.  The Bulldogs are now 8-9-2 overall and 3-7-0-0/0 in the conference, good for seventh place.

With the game tied at one entering the second period, the Bulldogs retook the lead 53 seconds into the frame when Karson Kuhlman got behind the UNO defense and roofed a shot over goalie Alex Blankenburg.

UMD made it 3-1 at 9:50 when Blake Young scored off a quick wrist shot.

The Mavericks closed the gap less than two minutes later when Mason Morelli broke in alone and fired a shot past goalie Hunter Shepard for his fourth of the season.

But just 32 seconds later, UMD restored the two-goal lead when Joey Anderson forced a turnover and fed Riley Tufte for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Scott Perunovich and Tufte added goals in the third period for the final score.

Blankenburg, in his first start of the season, made 20 saves and is now 1-1-0 on the season.  Shepard made 32 saves as the Mavericks outshot the Bulldogs, 34-26.

UMD opened the scoring with a power play goal at 6:12 of the first period.  Perunovich fed Joey Anderson who slipped a wrist shot under the crossbar for his fourth goal of the year.

The Mavericks replied during their own power play late in the opening stanza.  David Pope whipped a rink-wide pass to Steven Spinner at the left faceoff circle.  He fired a shot past Shepard for this sixth goal of the year.

Both teams finished the night 1-for-3 on the power play.

The Mavericks are off until Friday and Saturday, Dec. 29-30 when they host Union of ECAC hockey in their final non-conference series of the season.
