OMAHA, Neb. – No. 2 St. Cloud State shut out the No. 20 Omaha hockey team 5-0 on Saturday night to complete the two-game NCHC series sweep.
The Mavericks fell to 6-7-1 overall and 1-5-0-0/0 in the NCHC, putting them in eighth. The Huskies took over sole possession of first in the conference with the win, moving to 6-2-0-0/0 in the NCHC and 11-2-0 overall.
The Huskies broke on top early in the second period when Jake Wahlin scored from the right wing with a wrist shot at 4:20.
They stretched their lead to 2-0 when Blake Winiecki tipped in a shot by Jimmy Schuldt during a power play.
St. Cloud State tacked on three in the third with Jon Lizotte, Jack Poehling and Robbie Jackson all scoring.
SCSU freshman goalie David Hrenak earned his first collegiate shutout with 40 saves.
Evan Weninger made 28 saves in the loss.
The Mavericks are back home to host Minnesota Duluth on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 8-9.
NOTES:
- The Mavericks were shutout for the second time this season and in NCHC play.
- UNO registered 40 or more shots for the second straight game, outshooting the Huskies 40-33.
- The Mavericks had their string of 23 consecutive penalty kills snapped by Winiecki's goal.
