No. 14/15 Broncos Finish Sweep of Mavericks, 5-2

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – No. 14/15 Western Michigan finished off a sweep of the Omaha hockey team, winning 5-2 on Saturday night at Lawson Arena.

The Mavericks dropped their third straight game, falling to 4-5-1 overall and 1-3-0-0/0 in the NCHC.  The conference-leading Broncos won their third straight to improve to 8-4-1 overall and 5-1-0-0/0 in the NCHC.

Western Michigan grabbed a 2-0 lead with a quick burst midway through the first period.  Wade Allison got goals 13 seconds apart to put the Broncos in front.

The Mavericks trimmed the lead with a power play early in the second period.  Jake Randolph slid a pass across the slot to David Pope.  His blast was tipped in by Mason Morelli for his third goal of the year at 4:02.

The Broncos answered with goals from Jade McMullen and Ethen Frank, the latter shorthanded, to extend the Broncos' lead to 4-1.

UNO responded at 15:31 when Fredrik Olofsson fired a shot just under the crossbar after Jalen Schulz had made a strong effort to keep the puck in the zone.  Schulz earned an assist on the play, his first of the year.

The Mavericks appeared to have drawn to within one when Tyler Vesel swept home a loose puck in front, but the goal was waved off after video review.

Just 33 seconds later, the Broncos had a goal scrubbed after a video review.  In both cases, referees ruled goaltender interference.

Colt Conrad added his team-leading ninth goal of the year into an empty net with 1:01 remaining to complete the scoring.

Kris Oldham made a game-high 29 saves in the loss while Ben Blacker turned aside 27 for Western Michigan.  The Mavericks were outshot, 34-29.

Omaha begins an eight-game home stand next weekend when it hosts Northern Michigan on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 24-25.
