OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's soccer team closed out the 2017 regular season by defeating South Dakota 2-1 in overtime on Sunday at Caniglia Field.
Junior
Emily Romero provided the scoring punch with both Omaha goals, scoring in the 84th and 99th minutes to lift Omaha to 6-10-1 overall and 3-4 in Summit League play. South Dakota, meanwhile, fell to 4-13 on the season and 2-5 in conference action.
After a scoreless first half, South Dakota scored the first goal of the game in the 82nd minute. Kellee Willer took an angled shot from the right side that Omaha goalkeeper
Erin Bunker deflected. Sammie Villwock corralled the rebound and tucked her shot inside the post for a 1-0 Coyote lead.
Omaha leveled the game at 1-1 less than two minutes later. Freshman
Andrea Daves sent a ball along the right sideline to the feet of senior
Lydia Holtmann. Holtmann's pass found its mark as Romero tapped the ball into the open goal for her second goal of the season.
The Mavericks struck for the game-winner in the first overtime period. Daves was able to beat two Coyote defenders and send a cross into the six-yard box. The USD goalkeeper was able to get a hand on the cross, but the ball fell to the feet of Romero. Romero recovered the deflection and slipped the ball into the back of the net for the game-winner.
