Irish Hang On To Split with Mavericks, 5-4

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Omaha hockey team dropped a 5-4 decision to No. 8 Notre Dame on Friday, giving the Mavericks a split of their weekend series.

Ryan Galt had two goals to power the UNO attack while Jordan Klehr and David Pope each had a goal and an assist.

The Fighting Irish took the first lead of the night.  Colin Theisen finished off a pass from Cal Burke during an odd-man rush at 3:17.

The Mavericks tied the game when Riley Alferd won a faceoff back to Klehr.  Klehr skated to the top of the slot and fired a shot that slipped through goalie Cale Morris for his first goal of the season.

UNO took the lead on a power play late in the first.  Off the rush into the offensive zone, Pope fed Mason Morelli who threw the puck to Galt.  He cut across the crease and slipped a backhander by Morris at 18:34.

Notre Dame scored three goals in the first 4:36 of second period to take command of the game.  Theisen scored his second of the game on a power play just 32 seconds in, and Jack Jenkins and Cam Morrison added goals 11 seconds apart to make it 4-2.

The Mavericks trimmed the lead to one on a power play blast by Pope that netted his team-leading fourth goal of the year.  But Jordan Gross scored on a slap shot from the point just 1:35 later to restore the two-goal advantage.

In the third, the Mavericks again drew to within one on another strong individual play from Galt.  With three defenders to beat, he threw a shot on goal and then beat them to the rebound, tucking another backhander past Morris at 11:18.

Morris made several saves in the closing minutes as the Mavericks pulled Evan Weninger for an extra attacker.

Weninger made 30 saves and Morris stopped 27 as the Irish outshot the Mavericks, 35-31.

The Mavericks have a week off before beginning NCHC play at Colorado College on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10-11.
