Omaha Downs Western Illinois for First Summit League Win

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's soccer team picked up its first Summit League win of the season with a 2-0 win over Western Illinois on Saturday afternoon at Caniglia Field.

The Mavericks improved to 8-4-2 overall and 1-0-2 in Summit League action, while the Leathernecks fell to 4-9 and 2-1 in the conference.

Freshman Diego Gutierrez opened the scoring with a goal in the 31st minute.  Freshman Stevie Siy's shot bounced off the crossbar and found the feet of Gutierrez.  The Omaha native fired a shot from inside the penalty area and beat the Western Illinois goalkeeper to give Omaha a 1-0 lead.

Senior Emmanuel Hamzat found the back of the net during the 41st minute to extend the Mavericks' lead.  Senior Xavier Gomez played a ball down the left side to Gutierrez who centered the ball to Hamzat.  Hamzat placed his shot just out of the reach of the Leatherneck's goalkeeper for a 2-0 advantage at halftime.

•    Omaha outshot Western Illinois 16-6 and held a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal.
•    The Mavericks and Leathernecks combined for 36 fouls and three yellow cards.
•    Elvir Ibisevic and Xavier Gomez each had four shots with Gomez placing three shots on goal.
•    Diego Gutierrez finished with three points on a goal and an assist.
•    Emmanuel Hamzat scored his sixth goal of the season.
•    Xavier Gomez assisted on his league-leading seventh goal of the season. 
•    Ugo Tritz played a full 90 minutes and made one save.  Tritz is 2-0 this season with two shutouts.

Omaha returns to action next weekend on the road against Denver.  The Mavericks and Pioneers will play on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 8 p.m. CT in Colorado.
