OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's soccer team picked up its first Summit League win of the season with a 2-0 win over Western Illinois on Saturday afternoon at Caniglia Field.
The Mavericks improved to 8-4-2 overall and 1-0-2 in Summit League action, while the Leathernecks fell to 4-9 and 2-1 in the conference.
Freshman
Diego Gutierrez opened the scoring with a goal in the 31st minute. Freshman
Stevie Siy's shot bounced off the crossbar and found the feet of Gutierrez. The Omaha native fired a shot from inside the penalty area and beat the Western Illinois goalkeeper to give Omaha a 1-0 lead.
Senior
Emmanuel Hamzat found the back of the net during the 41st minute to extend the Mavericks' lead. Senior
Xavier Gomez played a ball down the left side to Gutierrez who centered the ball to Hamzat. Hamzat placed his shot just out of the reach of the Leatherneck's goalkeeper for a 2-0 advantage at halftime.
