OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha hockey team got goals from five different players in a 5-1 win over Arizona State on Friday night at Baxter Arena.
Tristan Keck had a goal and an assist, and Steve Spinner had two assists to lead the Mavericks in scoring.
Luke Nogard,
Tyler Vesel,
Mason Morelli and
Zach Jordan all added goals in the Mavericks' third meeting all-time with the Sun Devils.
The Mavericks improved to 2-1-0 while ASU dropped to 1-4-0.
The Mavericks opened the scoring at 8:38 of the first period. With a quick burst up ice,
Ryan Galt got free at center before hitting Nogard who was in full stride. He cut behind the ASU defender and slipped a shot between the pads of goalie Ryland Pashovitz for his first goal of the year.
Omaha stretched its lead with a pair of goals in the second period. At the nine-minute mark, Vesel forced a giveaway by Pashovitz who had come out of his net to play the puck. He threw a wraparound shot into the empty net for his second goal of the year.
Later, Spinner set up
Mason Morelli during a two-on-one break. He fired home his second of the year to stake the Mavericks to a 3-0 lead after two periods.
ASU broke up
Evan Weninger's shutout bid when Jakob Stridsberg scored on a blast from the point during a power play early in the third period.
The Mavericks answered back when Keck forced a giveaway at the UNO blue line and raced up the left wing. He beat Pashovitz with a wrist shot just inside the near post for an unassisted goal at 11:29.
Jordan closed the scoring when he fired home a pass from Spinner during a power play at 14:45.
Weninger, in his third straight start, made 26 saves while Pashovitz stopped 25 as the Mavericks outshot the Sun Devils, 30-27.
The two teams finish the series on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
NOTES:
- Nogard's goal was his first since his sophomore season when he scored against St. Cloud State on Feb. 20, 2016. It was his second career goal.
- Jordan's goal was his second career goal. The sophomore tallied his first against Colorado College on Nov. 15, 2016.
- The Mavericks went 1-for-5 on the power play while ASU was 1-for-3.
- UNO improved to 3-0-0 all-time against ASU which is in its third season of hockey.
