OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's soccer team dropped its first game of the season to Creighton on Friday evening, 3-1.
The Mavericks are now 1-1 on the season, while the Bluejays are 2-0-1.
Creighton got on the board in the 38th minute as a Hannah Miller's shot ricocheted off an Omaha defender and into the goal.
Katie Vanderzwaag had a chance to even the score in the 51st minute, but her header was cleared off the line by a Bluejay player.
Omaha leveled the score in the 67th minute when a Creighton defender was called for a foul in the penalty box. Carlie Cook delivered a perfectly placed shot to tie the game, 1-1.
Two minutes later, Creighton regained the lead. Emily Roll delivered a free kick from 25-yards out that found the head of Caeley Lordemann. Lordemann was able to head the ball inside the near post giving the Bluejays the lead, 2-1.
Moments later, Haley Shelton was issued a red card for pleading with the officials that a handball was missed.
Creighton added an insurance goal in the 89th minute to make the final score, 3-1.
Shelton took the loss in net making six saves while allowing two goals. Katlyn Schochenmaier finished the game allowing a goal while making three saves. McKenzie Meola made one save and allowed one goal for the Bluejays.
Omaha returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 29, when it plays host to North Dakota in a Noon game at Caniglia Field.
