OMAHA, Neb. – Fresh off its first win in Summit League tournament history, Omaha's magical march continues against South Dakota State as the No. 6 seed Mavericks take on the No. 2 seed Jackrabbits. Tipoff from the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls, SD is set for 2:30 p.m. and airs live on Midco and ESPN3. The Teams
Omaha is led by junior Mikaela Shaw, who is averaging a league best 18.4 points per game. Shaw averages a team-high eight rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.7 steals per game. The junior earned First Team All-Summit League honors earlier this month. Sophomore guard Remy Davenport averages 10.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. Caroline Hogue, a member of the Summit League All-Newcomer team, averages a league best three blocked shots per game as well as 9.4 points and 4.5 boards per game.
The Mavericks rank first in the Summit League in blocked shots, blocking 5.9 shots per game. They also limit the opposition to just 38.3 percent from the field, which is third best in the league. Omaha also limits the opposition to just 31 percent from the 3-point arc. Offensively, UNO shoots 41.9 percent from the floor and 32.6 percent from distance. At the free throw line, the Mavs rank in the top three in the league by hitting 71.8 percent of their foul shots.
South Dakota State is looking to play for their seventh Summit League tournament title in the last eight years with a win on Monday.
South Dakota State had five Jackrabbits earn Summit League postseason awards. Sophomore Macy Miller earned first team, sophomore Ellie Thompson second team and junior Kerri Young honorable mention honors. Junior Clarissa Ober was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Freshman Madison Guebert was named the Summit League Freshman of the Year and to the All-Newcomer Team.
Shaw Named to Academic All-America Third Team
Mikaela Shaw was named to the 2015-16 CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced on Thursday.
She is the fifth Academic All-American in Omaha women's basketball history, with Paige Frauendorfer being the first Academic All-American in the Division I era. Other women's basketball honorees include Laura Anderson (1988), Amy Loth (1997), and Stacie Kaiser (1997).
Two Earn All-Summit League Honors
Mikaela Shaw and Caroline Hogue were named to the 2016 All-Summit League Basketball Teams, the conference office announced Thursday.
Shaw was named to the Summit League First Team after leading the conference in scoring (18.3 points per game), field goals made (196), and total points (511). Hogue earned a spot on the All-Newcomer team and was the Summit League leader in blocked shots (83) and blocks per game (3.0).
History
There have been 66 all-time meetings between Omaha and SDSU. The Jackrabbits lead the series 37-29 and have won 13 straight match-ups dating back to Feb 16, 2002. This season, South Dakota State has won both meetings, including a 65-47 win in Omaha on Feb. 4.
