Omaha opened the game on an 8-0 run, sparked with two 3-pointers from White and Patterson. It was the start of a strong first-half long-range effort from the Mavericks, who hit nine treys in the first 20 minutes. Back-to-back threes by senior guard
Tim Smallwood later gave UNO its largest lead at 23-12 with 10:59 left, and the Mavs matched that again at 27-16 with a pair of free throws from senior guard/forward
Randy Reed II with 7:35 remaining.
Western Illinois then turned up the heat, using an 11-3 run with nine points from Miklusak to cut Omaha's lead to 30-27. From there, two 3-pointers from Sandifer solidified the Leathernecks' first lead of the night, 35-34, with 1:15 to go. A triple from senior guard
Kyler Erickson, however, halted the threat and put the Mavericks up again, 37-35, before two free throws from Dalan Ancrum closed the half with UNO and WIU tied 37-37.
Omaha and Western Illinois traded baskets to start the second half, with Patterson's fourth triple of the night stalling the score again at 48-48. After a dunk by Reed and a Patterson layup, the Mavericks led 52-50, but two Covington free throws knotted it once more at 52-all. The Mavericks took their final lead of the night, 53-52, on a Thurman foul shot.
Western then countered with a three and a driving layup from Miklusak, who singlehandedly put the Leathernecks up 57-53 with 10:32 left. Though two White layups got Omaha within two twice, Covington promptly drilled a triple to make it 64-59 with 6:50 to go. The Leathernecks never let the Mavericks back under three for the remainder of the game, taking their largest lead at 83-73 in the final minute. Thurman managed one last shot -- a 3-pointer -- in the closing seconds, as Western Illinois picked up its first conference win, 83-76.
