Omaha Topples Iowa in 98-89 Road Upset

Box Score IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Omaha men's basketball team weathered a 3-point onslaught from Iowa Saturday afternoon, upsetting the Hawkeyes 98-89 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. With their first win over a Power 5 school in the modern era and the first triumph over a Big Ten team in program history, the Mavericks improve to 4-4 (0-0 Summit League) on the season. Iowa drops to 3-5 (0-0 Big Ten).

Sophomore guard Zach Jackson scored a career-high 21 points to lead UNO, shooting 6-of-9 from the field with three 3-pointers and a 6-of-6 effort at the free throw line. He added a career-high-tying eight rebounds, a career-best three assists and a steal.

Senior guard Tra-Deon Hollins registered his first double-double of the season and the third of his career with 12 points and a season-high 11 assists, adding five boards, two steals and a block.

Junior forward Tre'Shawn Thurman shot 7-of-11 from the floor en route to 17 points, a team-high nine rebounds and a season-best three steals, while sophomore forward Mitch Hahn rounded it out with 15 points and five caroms.

Using a dominant inside effort to outscore Iowa 40-26 in the paint, Omaha outshot Iowa .479 (34-of-71) to .403 (27-of-67), though the Hawkeyes hit 14 threes for the afternoon. The Mavericks also had the edge in rebounding, 47-39, including 19-17 on the offensive end.

Iowa was led by a double-double from the nation's fifth-best scorer, Peter Jok, who posted 33 points and 10 rebounds with five 3-pointers and a 12-of-12 showing at the line. Jordan Bohannon added 20 points with six 3-pointers, and Cordell Pemsl had another 18 points for the day.

In the opening half, Omaha shot .513 (20-of-39) and scored 53 points in the half, their second-highest first-half total this season. Aided by 10 offensive rebounds, the Mavericks also held a 23-15 edge on the glass over the Hawkeyes.

Iowa built a 34-27 advantage by 8:29, courtesy of an 11-3 run. Omaha then rattled off a 9-0 run to tie the game at 36-36 with buckets by Jackson, Hollins and sophomore center Zach Pirog. The Mavericks evened it again at 43-43 with a Hollins jumper at 2:16, then ended the half on a 10-2 run over the last 1:38 to lead 53-47 at the intermission.

In the second half, Omaha went up by as much as 11, when a Hahn trey with 7:35 to go made it 79-68. Iowa battled back, trimming the Mavericks' lead to 87-84 on two free throws from Jok with 1:53 left. But Jackson kicked into gear from there, draining a three on the next play and following with four free throws to extend the lead to double digits again before Omaha sealed it at 98-89.
