OMAHA, Neb. – Tim Walters has been named the second head coach in Omaha women' soccer history, Vice Chancellor for Athletics Trev Alberts announced Monday.

"We are thrilled to announce Tim as our head women's soccer coach," said Alberts.  "Tim is a proven winner both as a player and a coach.  His successful background, coupled with his competitive spirit and desire to win, makes him a perfect fit for Omaha soccer."

"Coach Walters has expressed great enthusiasm for coaching women," said associate athletic director Mike Kemp, who oversees women's soccer.  "His passion for soccer and his unwavering commitment to UNO made him an obvious choice for this position.

"He has been with the men's program since its inception in 2011 and has worked with coach Jason Mims to build the team into a championship level program.  We now look to Tim to do the same with the women's team."

Walters replaces Don Klosterman, who coached the program from 1999-2016.

Walters, who just completed his sixth year as an assistant on the UNO men's soccer coaching staff, helped the squad post an overall 29-16-9 (.620) record over the past three seasons, including two Summit League regular-season championships (2014, 2016).

Walters started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., where he was an assistant under head coach Keith Buckley for one season.  In 2010, he helped the Tars to a 15-4-3 overall record and a national runner-up finish in NCAA Division II.

"I am excited to continue my coaching career here at Omaha and in a city where I have spent the better part of the last decade," said Walters.  "I look forward to guiding the growth and development of our women's soccer program in the years to come and putting our student-athletes in a position to compete and succeed both in the Summit League and on a national level.

"Additionally, I would like to thank Trev Alberts, Mike Kemp, Ann Oatman and the entire search committee for granting me a head coaching opportunity at a university my family and I have grown to love. The administration has shown me a great deal of confidence through this hiring process, and our soccer program is fortunate to have such outstanding support as we embark upon a new season."

A native of St. Louis, Mo., Walters started his collegiate playing career with one season at Kentucky and transferred to Creighton for his final three years of eligibility. An attacking player, he started 29 of the 53 matches he appeared in and tallied seven goals and seven assists over his final two seasons. During Creighton's 16-2-2 campaign in 2008, Walters had three goals and three assists. All three of his goals as a senior were game-winners, including clutch shots at sixth-ranked California and against Bradley in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament semifinals.
