Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Omaha men's basketball team used a second-half surge to defeat UMKC Thursday night, picking up an 80-75 road victory at Municipal Auditorium. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 6-5 (0-0 Summit League), while the Kangaroos dropped to 7-5 (0-0 WAC) in their first home loss this season.
Senior guard
Marcus Tyus led UNO in scoring for the second straight game, finishing with 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting alongside three rebounds and four assists.
Sophomore guard
Zach Jackson tacked on 15 points spurred by 4-of-6 shooting from long range, adding six rebounds and a steal. Junior guard
Daniel Norl also tallied in double figures with 10 points, and junior forward
Tre'Shawn Thurman pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds with eight points.
Senior guard
Tra-Deon Hollins also dished out a game-best six assists and added seven points, eight rebounds and two steals.
Omaha outshot UMKC .438 (28-of-64) to .380 (27-of-71) from the floor and .375 (9-of-24) to .286 (8-of-28) from distance. UNO also had the edge in rebounding, 47-40.
Two 'Roos scored in double figures, with 27 points from LaVell Boyd and 14 more from Isaiah Ross.
Neither team gained offensive momentum in the opening half, with Omaha shooting .371 (13-of-35) and UMKC .351 (13-of-37). The 'Roos forced eight Maverick miscues, outscoring UNO 11-3 off turnovers. With five ties and three lead changes, UMKC held a slight 35-32 edge at halftime.
Tyus, however, exploded for 17 points in the second half, going 6-of-6 from the floor to pace the Mavericks. As a team, Omaha shot .517 (15-of-29), including 6-of-10 from 3-point range, to pull away in the final 20 minutes. Bolstered by three consecutive Jackson triples over a 1:23 span, Omaha went on an 8-of-8 shooting spree from 10:35 to 5:30, surging to its largest lead of the night at 73-62. Though UMKC made it a three-point game at 77-74 on a Boyd layup with 23 seconds left, Omaha held off the 'Roos for the 80-75 win.
Omaha makes its final non-conference home appearance this Sunday, Dec. 18, welcoming Cal State Fullerton. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. at Baxter Arena, and Gary Sharp and John Karhoff will have the radio call on 1620 The Zone. Links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.
