Box Score FULLERTON, Calif. -- The Omaha men's basketball team picked up a key road win Wednesday night on the backs of Omaha Central duo
Tre'Shawn Thurman and
Tra-Deon Hollins, defeating Cal State Fullerton 83-73 at Titan Gym. With the victory, the Mavericks improve to 3-4 (0-0 Summit League), while the Titans drop to 2-5 (0-0 Big West) with their fifth consecutive loss.
Thurman, a junior forward, recorded his second straight double-double -- and his third of the season -- with 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Hollins, a senior guard, added a game-high and season-best 20 points along with six boards, four assists and four steals. He hit 5-of-10 from the field and was a flawless 8-of-8 at the free throw line.
Sophomore guard
Zach Jackson also tallied in double figures, finishing with 12 points on perfect 10-of-10 shooting at the line as well as five rebounds. Senior guard
Marcus Tyus also had 10 points, firing in 4-of-7.
As a team, Omaha shot .419 (26-of-62) to CSUF's .435 (27-of-62) but finished at a .926 (25-of-27) clip at the line, ahead of the Titans' .458 (11-of-24). The Mavericks also had the advantage on the boards, outrebounding Fullerton 46-35.
The Titans were led by 18 points from Tre' Coggins. Dwight Ramos put up another 12 points, and Jackson Rowe added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
A back-and-forth first half saw three ties and seven lead changes before Omaha got past a sluggish start to go ahead 18-17 on a pair of Jackson free throws. The Mavericks lit up offensively from there, shooting at a 54 percent clip to end the half on a 21-6 run. Led by nine points on a trio of threes off the bench from redshirt freshman guard
JT Gibson, as well as eight points and seven boards from Thurman, the Mavericks created a 37-23 lead by the break.
Omaha grabbed its largest lead of the game at 46-29 with a Hollins trey less than four minutes into the second half. The Titans, however, quickly whittled it to a three-point margin, with a Coggins 3-pointer capping a 14-0 run that made it 48-45 at 13:56. A layup by Austen Awosika with 8:32 to play brought CSUF within four at 56-52, but Omaha's closing effort at the line sealed it, as the Mavericks hit 15 of their last 16 foul shots on the way to the 83-73 win.
Omaha makes its next road stop on Saturday, Dec. 3, visiting Iowa at 1 p.m. at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa. The game will be broadcast live on BTN Plus, and Gary Sharp will have the radio call on 1180 Zone 2. Links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.
