Mavericks Drop 94-77 Decision at Eastern Michigan

Box Score

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Turnovers proved costly for the Omaha men's basketball team Saturday afternoon, as the Mavericks fell 94-77 to Eastern Michigan at the EMU Convocation Center. UNO is now 2-4 (0-0 Summit League) on the season, while the Eagles improve to 4-3 (0-0 MAC).

Junior forward Tre'Shawn Thurman notched his second double-double of the year with team highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds, hitting 7-of-11 from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 at the line. Sophomore guard Zach Jackson pitched in a career-high 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting, and senior guard Marcus Tyus rounded it out with 10 points alongside season bests of five rebounds and three assists and a career-high-tying three steals.

As a team, Omaha shot .500 (25-of-50) from the floor to Eastern Michigan's .557 (34-of-61), but a dismal .188 (3-of-16) from distance to EMU's .462 (6-of-13). The Eagles forced 24 Maverick turnovers with 16 steals and scored 36 points off miscues.

EMU was led by James Thompson IV, who finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds for his fifth consecutive double-double. Ray Lee (20 points), Willie Mangum IV (18) and Ty Toney (11) also tallied in double figures.

Omaha opened the game to a 9-5 lead, helped by early scores from Jackson and junior forward Daniel Meyer. EMU eventually broke up an 8-0 Maverick run with a Lee layup and a Toney three, shaving Omaha's lead to 11-10. The Eagles then went ahead 16-15 on a steal and a layup by Mangum, while UNO suffered a nearly four-minute scoring drought that was finally broken with a Tyus 3-pointer at 9:34. As EMU built up to a 31-22 advantage, Omaha went more than three minutes without a field goal until a Jackson layup at 6:07.

The Mavericks went on a short 6-0 run between 4:05 and 3:08 with buckets from Jackson, Thurman and senior guard Tra-Deon Hollins to come within three and later used a Hollins jumper and a pair of Tyus free throws to make it a 37-36 ballgame. But in a first half plagued by a combined 22 turnovers by both teams, EMU went into the break with a slight 39-36 edge.

The Eagles came out firing in the second stanza, shooting .600 (18-of-30). Lee hit 4-of-4 from long range for 16 points in the half, and Thompson chipped in 10 points and eight boards. EMU seized its largest lead at 76-57 with 8:32 remaining before going on to the victory, 94-77.

Omaha returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 30, visiting Cal State Fullerton for the first of two games against the Titans this season. Tipoff is set for 9:30 p.m. CT at Titan Gym in Fullerton, Calif., and Gary Sharp will have the radio broadcast on 1180 Zone 2. Links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.
