OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's soccer team created six second half chances, but couldn't find the equalizer as the Mavericks fell to South Dakota, 1-0, on Friday afternoon at First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex.The Mavericks dropped to 5-10-3 (3-3-1 Summit League) on the season, while the Coyotes improved to 4-13-1 (3-4 Summit League).
USD broke through in the 58th minute with a score by Sammie Villwock for her fourth goal of the season. Taryn LaBree sent a pass across the mouth of the goal to Villwock who one-timed her shot inside the left post.
Omaha had a chance to take the lead late in the first half as a header by Ava Doetsch ricocheted off the post, and Kelsey Stithem's follow-up shot went wide.
In the final minute of play, Lydia Holtmann's shot was denied by South Dakota's Sydney Hardin to keep the Coyotes' one goal lead.
Omaha held the advantage in shots, 14-11, and an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. Holtman had a team-best five shots with four on goal. Haley Shelton allowed one goal and made four saves. USD's Hardin collected seven saves and recorded the shutout.
Omaha returns to action for its final regular-season game on Sunday, Oct. 30, traveling to Denver. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. (CT) at CIBER Field, and the game will be broadcast live on Altitude TV. Links to stats and video will be available on OMavs.com.
