Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha men's basketball team registered its first 2-0 start in Summit League play since joining the conference, spurred by a 76-71 triumph over IUPUI Sunday at Baxter Arena. With their fourth consecutive win, the Mavericks improved to 10-6 (2-0 Summit League), while the Jaguars dropped to 5-12 (1-1 Summit League).
Senior guard
Devin Patterson led all scorers with 24 points, shooting 9-of-14 from the field and a perfect 5-of-5 at the line. The Portsmouth, Va., native added a game-high four assists and two steals.
Sophomore forward
Tre'Shawn Thurman joined Patterson with another 20-point performance, totaling 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting. The Omaha Central product pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds and had a season-high-tying three blocks. Junior guard
Tra-Deon Hollins, another Central product, also finished in double figures with 11 points, as well as four boards, three assists and a game-high three steals to his nation-leading total.
Omaha hit 48 percent (29-of-61) of its shots from the floor, 21 percent (3-of-14) from long range and 79 percent (15-of-19) at the line. Western Illinois shot 45 percent (30-of-67) from the field, 7 percent (1-of-15) from 3-point range and 91 percent (10-of-11) at the stripe. The Jaguars held the edge in rebounding (37-32) and steals (12-7), while the Mavericks had the advantage in blocks (6-1) and assists (10-8).
IUPUI was led by 16 points from Marcellus Barksdale. Four other players also scored in double figures for the Jaguars: Matt O'Leary (11), Mason Archie II (10), Jordan Pickett (10) and Nick Osborne (10).
A back-and-forth first half saw nine lead changes, with IUPUI shooting 43 percent (15-of-35) to Omaha's 44 percent (15-of-34). UNO led early, going up by as much as seven, but IUPUI went ahead for the first time at 16-15. Later in the half, a 4-for-4 spurt from the field helped the Mavericks regain the lead at 27-26 with 4:41 left. From there, IUPUI shot ahead by four, but a layup and two free throws from senior forward
Jake White closed the half, leaving the score tied at 33-33.
IUPUI took its only lead of the second half on a tip-in by Evan Hall that made it 39-38 with 16:09 to go. UNO and IUPUI flirted with a one- to three-point margin for the next six minutes before a Hollins layup sparked a 9-0 run that put the Mavericks ahead 60-49. The Jaguars eventually cut it to 60-55 on three straight buckets from Barksdale, but a prompt 3-pointer from senior guard
Kyler Erickson quelled the threat with five minutes to go.
With 1:35 left, two Hollins free throws stretched Omaha's advantage to 70-63, but a jump shot and two foul shots by Darell Combs trimmed it to 70-67 with under a minute remaining. On the next possession, IUPUI missed four straight field goal attempts, and a Thurman free throw with 35 seconds left made it a four-point game. Archie then cut it to 71-69 on a make that stopped the Jaguars' 0-of-6 drought from the floor, but the Mavericks answered with three free throws between Patterson and Hollins to push UNO ahead 74-69. Archie managed one final dunk with seven seconds to go to make it a three-point game again, but two final Patterson free throws clinched it at 76-71 for Omaha.
