OMAHA, Neb. – Remy Davenport set a career-high with 10 3-pointers in lifting Omaha past Denver 67-55 Sunday afternoon at Baxter Arena, snapping a three-game losing streak.
Davenport set program records for 3-pointers made and attempted (15), while just missing a Summit League record for makes (11). The sophomore sharp-shooter had game-high 30 points on 10-of-15 shooting. She was also active on the boards with six rebounds, while dishing out five assists and blocking two shots.
Mikaela Shaw added her sixth double-double of the season in the victory. Shaw had 10 points and 11 rebounds. She also had four assists. Freshmen Ellie Brecht and Amber Vidal each chipped in six points, while Abi Lujan and Marissa Preston each had five.
Alecia Espinoza and Jacqlyn Poss each had 13 points to lead Denver. Espinoza also grabbed five boards and blocked two shots. Ciera Morgan added 10 points. Paige Bradley had six points, four rebounds, and a game-high eight assists.
The Mavericks improved to 10-8 overall and 3-3 in Summit League action. The Pioneers dropped to 4-15 overall and 2-4 in league play.
UNO finished shooting 46.2 percent from the field (24-52), including a season-best 50 percent behind the arc (15-30). DU was limited to 39.7 percent from the field (25-63) and to 14.3 percent from 3-point range (2-14). Omaha also won the rebounding battle, 38-25, but lost the turnover battle 16-5.
Denver started off hot by making its first four shots as they took an 8-3 lead. Omaha shot its way back into the game with a pair of trey's from Davenport, plus another from Bobbi Beckwith. A pair of triples from Brecht and Preston put the Mavericks on top at the end of the first quarter, 19-16.
Espinoza and Avery Queen opened the second quarter with buckets and gave Denver back the lead, 20-19. Davenport's third 3-pointer of the game put UNO back in front, 22-20. The triple was the 100th of her career. Again Denver used baskets from Bradley and Espinoza to regain the lead with 4:44. The two teams would exchange leads until the final seconds of the half. Shaw gave UNO a two point lead with a lay-up with 38 seconds left in the quarter only to see Cierra Morgan tie it with six seconds left. The Mavericks had trouble inbounding the ball, but Shaw got the pass into Davenport who took three dribbles and put up a prayer as the buzzer sounded. The shot hit the rim and bounced in, but the referees went to replay to confirm the bucket. After the review, the shot was declared good and gave Omaha a three-point lead at the half, 35-32.
Denver was not rattled as it tied the game up in the opening minutes of the second half, 35-35. Davenport knocked down three 3-pointers and Lujan added one of her own as the Mavericks opened up a 51-38 lead in the third quarter. Denver added a basket late in the quarter to make the score 51-40 in Omaha's favor.
The Mavericks continued their offensive onslaught in the fourth quarter. A pair of Vidal free throws and another Davenport trey pushed the lead to 16 with 7:07 left in regulation. Omaha's largest lead of the game came after Davenport's 10th triple of the day with 4:36 remaining, 65-47. The Pioneers were able to hold the Mavericks without a basket for 3:32 and cut the lead to 10 points with 90 seconds left in the game. A Vidal lay-up and a pair of Shaw rebounds would secure the victory for Omaha.
