Women's Basketball Falls at IUPUI, 75-59

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Omaha women's basketball fell at IUPUI Wednesday evening by a final score of 75-59 in Indianapolis, Ind.  The Mavericks are now 9-8 overall and 2-3 in Summit League, while the Jaguars improved to 12-5 overall and 3-1 in league play.

Junior Mikaela Shaw had a team high 20 points and seven rebounds to lead Omaha.  Shaw was 10-of-13 from the floor.  She also dished out four assists.  Caroline Hogue finished the game with 16 points and four blocked shots.  Bobbi Beckwith added seven points and five rebounds, while Remy Davenport chipped in five points and six assists.

Mikale Rogers was one of four Jaguars in double-figures.  Rogers was 11-of-19 from the floor for 26 points.  She also grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots.  Danielle Lawrence had 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three blocks.  Jenna Gunn and Shaquira Scott each had 10 points.

Omaha came out firing to start the game, scoring the first five points of the game.  Hogue opened the game with a jumper and followed that up with a 3-pointer moments later.  Another jumper from Hogue game the Mavericks a 7-2 lead 2:10 into the game.  A Shaw lay-up with 2:12 left in the quarter gave UNO its biggest lead of the evening, 18-10.  IUPUI finished the stanza on a 6-2 run to make the score 20-16 at the end of the first quarter.

The Mavericks came out shooting to start the second quarter.  Abi Lujan nailed a trey which was followed up by a Beckwith layup as Omaha opened up a nine point lead with 8:46 left in the half, 25-16.  IUPUI would outscore UNO 13-2 over the next four minutes and took its first lead of the game with 4:41 left in the half, 29-27.  Beckwith would give the Mavericks the lead back with five quick points, 32-29.  The two teams would battle back and forth over the next 3:15 before Sydney Hall gave IUPUI the lead, 38-35.  Shaw would convert a lay-up with seven seconds left to cut the Jaguars lead to one at the half, 38-37.

The Mavericks went cold after the intermission, making just four field goals in the third quarter. A Shaw jumper with 8:02 left in the third quarter cut the Jaguars lead to one point, 40-39.  IUPUI extended its lead to seven points over the next four minutes.  Shaw would keep the Mavericks within three points with a pair of jumpers, but the Jaguars led 52-47 at the end of three quarters.

IUPUI outscored Omaha 23-12 in the final quarter.  A jumper from Vanessa Barajas with 7:27 left in regulation cut the Jaguar lead to seven, 58-51.  A Rogers' jumper at 3:11 left in regulation capped an 11-2 IUPUI run.  The Jags sank four free throws down the stretch for their biggest lead at 18 points with 1:20 left.  Kalen Phillips scored the final four points in the period for Omaha.

  • Mikaela Shaw has scored in double-figures every game this season and has scored 20 or more six times this year.
  • Shaw has grabbed at least seven rebounds in 11 games this season.
  • Caroline Hogue blocked four shots, it is the 12th time this season she has accomplished the feat.
  • Remy Davenport set a career-high with six assists.
