SEDONA, Ariz. –
Sophie Peters set a school record for lowest 36-hole tournament score at the Red Rocks Invitational, helping the Omaha women's golf team to a 16th-place finish on Saturday.
Peters fired her second straight round of 72 in the tournament to finish at 144, tying her with Charlotte Jaengkit of Grand Canyon for the overall lead in the huge field of 129 golfers. Peters then won a one-hole playoff with a birdie on a par-five to earn individual medalist honors.
Peters' score was two strokes better than the previous school record set by Sara Wolfe in 2008 and later equaled by Erin Ommen the following season and by Dani Suponchick in 2009.
The Mavericks shot a season-low team round of 306 on Saturday to finish at 624 for the tournament. Host Northern Arizona won with a score of 597, five strokes ahead of Cal Poly which finished second. Grand Canyon was third at 606.
Katie Kesti was second for the Mavericks and finished in a tie for 59th with a score of 157 that included a final round of 77.
Megan Vetrovsky also shot a score of 77 in round two to finish one stroke back at 158, good for a tie for 67th.
Makenna Kroeker shot 80 on Saturday to finish at 165, good for a tie for 99th.
Alexa Ruwe finished the scoring for the Mavs with a two-day total of 179.
The Mavericks return to action at the Thunderbird Golf Invitational at Southern Utah on March 12-13.
