Peters Leads Mavericks on Day One at Grand Canyon

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – Sophie Peters shot an even-par round of 72 to lead the Omaha women's golf team in the first round of the GCU Invitational on Monday.  It's the Mavericks' first tournament of the spring season.

Peters carded four birdies in her round over the 6,200-yard layout at the Wigwam Golf Course.  The score is a career best and ties the team-best round shot by Katie Kesti who fired a 72 at the Creighton Classic in October.

Peters is currently in a tie for second in the massive field of 119 golfers.  The Mavericks are currently 14th in the field of 21 teams.

California Riverside leads with a score of 295 followed by Northern Arizona at 301.  Grand Canyon's A and B teams are tied for third at 302.

Makenna Kroeker was second for UNO and in a tie for 17th overall with a career-best round of 76, four strokes better than her previous career round.  Katie Kesti shot 81 in the first round to finish third for the Mavericks and in a tie for 72nd overall.

Megan Vetrovsky was fourth for the Mavericks and tied for 107th overall with a round of 88 while Alexa Ruwe carded a 92 and is in a tie for 116th place after the first 18 holes.

The second round of the three-round tournament begins tomorrow at 11 a.m. CT.
