Box Score MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Omaha basketball team again flirted with the possibility of a big road upset Friday afternoon, falling 93-90 to Minnesota at Williams Arena. With the loss, the Mavericks are now 3-3 (0-0 Summit League) on the season, while the Gophers improve to 4-2 (0-0 Big Ten).
Senior forward
Jake White, a native of Chaska, Minn., led all scorers with 23 points on 7-of-16 shooting, including a 3-of-3 effort behind the arc. Sophomore forward
Tre'Shawn Thurman registered his second double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds, an assist and a block.
Junior guard
Tra-Deon Hollins finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, nine assists, four steals and a block. Senior guard/forward
Randy Reed II and freshman guard
JT Gibson, also playing in his home state, had 11 points apiece. Gibson added five boards, two assists and a steal, while Reed had three rebounds as well.
As a team, UNO shot 48 percent (36-of-75) from the field, 30 percent (7-of-23) from long range and 73 percent (11-of-15) at the line. Minnesota came in at 49 percent (32-of-65) from the floor, 55 percent (11-of-20) beyond the arc and 60 percent (18-of-30) at the stripe. The Mavericks held the advantage on the glass, outrebounding the Gophers 43-38.
Fifty of Omaha's points came in the paint, and the Mavericks outscored the Gophers 23-2 on the fastbreak.
Minnesota was led by a team-high 18 points from Joey King, who was a perfect 4-for-4 from three. Bakary Konate also had a double-double for the Gophers, adding 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Omaha opened the game on an 8-0 run, spurred by a steal and a layup apiece from Hollins and Jackson on back-to-back possessions, as well as two layups from White. He accounted for 10 points for the Mavericks in the first five minutes, shooting 4-for-5 before facing early foul trouble.
The Gophers took their first lead of the game on a Nate Mason 3-pointer to make it 28-27 with 5:46 left. The score tied four times in the remainder of the first half, and with one last jumper by Gibson, Omaha took a slight 42-41 lead by halftime.
The second half saw four ties and seven lead changes. After a Mason layup and a King triple, the Gophers went up 66-60, but a Gibson 3-pointer and two layups from him and senior guard/forward
Randy Reed II put the Mavericks ahead again 67-66. UNO's lead held until UM tied it at 73-73 on a Morris layup and a King three.
Minnesota built a 90-83 advantage with 2:01 remaining before Hollins drove in for a layup and Gibson swiped the ball from the Gophers and took it coast-to-cast, trimming it to 90-87. Thurman later nailed two free throws to make it a one-point game at 90-89 with 31.6 seconds to go.
Over the final 25 seconds, the Gophers made just three of eight shots at the line, but Omaha missed its four final field goal attempts. Minnesota's Jordan Murphy made one of two foul shots with 0.3 seconds left, then stole away one last inbounds pass from the Mavericks, allowing Minnesota to edge Omaha 93-90.
Omaha returns to action Tuesday, Dec. 1, hosting Eastern Michigan at Baxter Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m., and Gary Sharp and Grant Nieland will have the call of the game on 1180 Zone 2. Links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.
