Omaha Hosts Missouri State in Men's Soccer Home Finale

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's soccer team wraps up the home portion of its schedule on Wednesday, Oct. 28 against Missouri State.  Kickoff from Caniglia Field is set for 7 p.m.

Last week, the Mavs went 1-0-1 with a 1-1 draw at Drake and a 2-1 home win over Oral Roberts.

Omaha by the Numbers

4660 – Attendance so far this season through eight home games, tops in the Summit League.

583 – Average home attendance this season.

14 – Number of games started by Mark Moulton this season.  Moulton is the only player on the roster to start every game.

16 – Number of points from Logan Mendez, which leads the team.  Mendez has six goals and four assists.  He ranks second in the Summit League in goals and points, as well as fourth in assists.

About Omaha

The Mavericks went 1-0-1 last week with a draw at Drake and a home win over Oral Roberts.  For the season, Omaha is 8-4-2 overall and 2-2-1 in Summit League play.  UNO is currently in second place in the league standings with seven points.

Senior Logan Mendez has taken the team lead in goals (6) and points (16).  Mendez is also second on the team with four assists.  Currently, he is tied for second in the conference in goals and points.  Junior Mark Moulton leads the team in assists (5) and is second in goals (5) and points (15).  Moulton is third in the league in points and assists.

Red shirt senior Josh Christensen and red shirt sophomore Joseph Ghitis each have spent time in goal for Omaha this season.  Christensen has six starts and a 4-1 overall record.  He owns a 1.20 goals-against average and a .784 save percentage.  Ghitis is 4-3-2 overall with a 0.88 goals-against average and a.784 save percentage.  Christensen and Ghitis rank fourth and fifth respectively in save percentage in league play.  Christensen is second in goals-against (7), while Ghitis is second in goals-against average (0.88).

This season, UNO is eligible for Summit League and NCAA postseason competitions after completing the transition to NCAA Division I.

Mulling Over Missouri State

Bear Notes:

  • Missouri State is 5-5-3 overall this season and 2-2-1 in Missouri Valley play.  MSU sits in fifth place in the Missouri Valley standings.
  • The Bears are coming off a 4-2 conference win over Evansville.  Four different players scored for MSU, while Liam Priestly made two saves in the win.
  • Missouri State has scored 12 goals this season on nine assists.
  • MSU has allowed 16 goals this season.
  • Missouri State has played three ranked teams this season.  The Bears topped No. 18 Loyola Marymount, 2-1.  They also lost at No. 1 Creighton, 4-0, and at No. 17 New Mexico, 1-0.

Players to watch:

Freshman Jake Buckle leads the team in points and goals this season.  Buckle hails from Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, England.

  • Has started 10 of 13 games.  Leads the team with seven points on three goals and an assist.

Sophomore goalkeeper Liam Priestly started two games in net for the Bears last season, before taking over fulltime this year.  Priestly hails from Essex, England and played for the Tottenham Hotspur academy.

  • Started all 13 matches this season with a 1.15 goals-against average and has a .590 save percentage.

Series History against Missouri State

This is the second all-time meeting between the two programs.  Missouri State won the only meeting in 2013 in double overtime, 1-0, in Springfield, Mo.

Mavs Move-up a Spot in West Region

Omaha has moved up one spot in the NSCAA NCAA Western Region Poll this week.  The Mavericks are now sixth in the region.  Summit League leader, Denver remains atop the Western Region with an 11-0-3 record, but dropped one spot in the latest national rankings.

End of an Era

Last weekend, the men's soccer program honored eight seniors for their contributions to the program.  The eight student-athletes being recognized are: Emir Alihodzic, Josh Christensen, Kevin Correa, Andres Irvin, Logan Mendez, Jesus Perez, Felipe da Silva, and Parker Victor.

Christensen and Mendez were part of the first UNO men's soccer team in 2011.  Mendez played three games in 2011 and scored the first goal in program history, but was forced to take a redshirt following injury.  Christensen took a redshirt season in 2013.

 Up Next

The Mavericks hit the road to face No. 21 Rutgers in Piscataway, New Jersey at 12 p.m. (CT).  This will be the first meeting between the two programs.
