Mavs Drop Conference Opener to South Dakota, 64-48

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's basketball team dropped its Summit League opener to South Dakota on Friday night at Sapp Fieldhouse, 64-48.

Omaha dropped to 5-8 overall and 0-1 in the Summit League.  South Dakota is now 11-3 overall and 1-0 in the league play.

Remy Davenport and Mikaela Shaw led Omaha in scoring with 15 points apiece.  Davenport was 5-for-8 from the floor with all five buckets coming from behind the 3-point arc.  Shaw went 7-for-14 from the floor and pulled down a team-high nine boards. 

Brianna Bogard added seven points, while Lanese Bough and Taijhe Kelly each chipped in four points.  Bough had a team high five assists and grabbed six boards.  Madi Robson had four points and four assists.

South Dakota had three players in double figures.  Raeshel Contreras had a team high 12 points.  Margaret McCloud and Nicole Seekamp each had 11 points.  McCloud had a game high 10 rebounds, including five offensive boards.

South Dakota raced out to an early seven point lead (12-7) at the 15:45 mark of the opening half.  Omaha cut the lead to 12-9 with 12:56 remaining on a pair of Shaw jumpers.

The Coyotes extended the lead to seven points (16-9) on a pair of buckets by Kate Liveringhouse.  A pair of Davenport 3-pointers and a two more buckets from Shaw tied the game at 20-20 with 3:19 left in the half.

Davenport's third 3-pointer of the half gave Omaha a 23-20 lead at the 1:54 mark.  USD tied the game at 25-25 with under a minute left in the half.  Following a missed Omaha shot, Nicole Seekamp hit a jumper to give South Dakota a 27-25 lead at halftime.

Omaha's Brianna Bogard tied the game at 27-27 early in the second half.  The Coyotes went on a 6-0 run to reclaim the lead at 33-27 with 16:56 left in the game.  Davnport drained her fourth 3-pointer of the evening to cut the lead in half (33-30) and Bogard sank three free-throws to tie the game at 33-33 with 15:14 remaining in regulation.

South Dakota responded with a 21-6 run over the next 6:24 to take a 54-39 lead with 8:50 left.  The Coyotes extended the lead to 19 points (62-43) with 2:03 remaining on a Liveringhouse lay-up.

The Mavericks made one last push in the closing minutes.  Davenport nailed her fifth 3-pointer of the night cutting the lead to 62-48. Following a USD turnover, Bough made a lay-up to cut the lead to 14 points (62-48) with 1:41 remaining.  That was as close as UNO could close the gap.  USD scored with five seconds remaining in the game to make the final score 64-48.

The Mavs shot 35.2 percent (19-for-54) for the game and 26.6 percent (6-for-21) from 3-point range.  Omaha shot 80.0 percent (4-for-5) from the free throw line.  Omaha held USD to just 35.7 percent (25-for-70) from the floor and 22.7 percent (5-for-22) from the 3-point line.  The Coyotes shot 56.3 percent (9-for-16) from the free throw line.

South Dakota had a 48-31 advantage on the boards, including a 20-5 advantage on the offensive glass.

The Mavericks hit the road this weekend as they travel to Macomb, Ill. to play Western Illinois on Sunday, Jan. 4.  Tip-off at the Western Center is set for 3:30 p.m.
