Mavericks Fall Short Despite Carter's Career Day

Box Score

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's basketball team returned home to Ralston Arena Sunday afternoon, falling to conference foe IUPUI 89-84. Following the loss, the Mavericks drop to 7-11 (1-5 Summit League), while the Jaguars improve to 7-12 (3-2 Summit League).

Omaha saw a record performance from senior guard CJ Carter, who finished with a career-high 45 points on 19-of-25 shooting. The Omaha Benson product did most of his damage from beyond the arc, where he drained seven triples on eight attempts. Carter also moved into 10th in school history for scoring, as his 1,323 points passed former Maverick Thor Palamore (1,309).

Junior guards Marcus Tyus (19) and Devin Patterson (11) also finished in double figures for Omaha. Patterson added five assists and two steals, while Tyus shot 7-of-10 from the field and 4-of-6 from afar.

As a team, Omaha shot .567 (34-of-60) from the field and .500 (8-of-16) from downtown. IUPUI finished at .569 (33-of-58) from the floor and .417 (5-of-12) from long range, and the Jaguars won the rebounding battle, 37-20.

IUPUI had three players reach double figures on the afternoon, led by Mason Archie's team-high 19 points with two helpers and two steals. P.J. Boutte added 12 points for the Jaguars, going a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Aaron Brennan also contributed 10 points while nabbing five rebounds.

The game saw three lead changes early, with Omaha tying it at 19-19 on a Tyus layup before IUPUI responded with another layup by Marcellus Barksdale to go ahead by two. A 12-0 Jaguar scoring run then put IUPUI ahead 31-19, and the Jaguars maintained a double-digit lead until two Tyus free throws closed the first half at 40-31.

After tallying 15 points in the first half, Carter exploded for 30 more in the second stanza. He shot 12-of-14 from the floor, hitting six of seven from long range. The Mavericks broke through IUPUI's double-digit advantage with 4:55 to go, as a Tyus three made it 72-64. With 1:27 left, the Jaguars pushed ahead 81-72, but layups by Carter and Tyus quickly sheared it to a five-point margin. Another bucket by Carter with 0:27 remaining cut it to 82-78, followed by back-to-back Carter treys at 0:08 and 0:03 to make it a four-point game again at 88-84. Despite Carter's record performance, IUPUI hit one more free throw by D.J. McCall, securing the win at 89-84.

Omaha returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 24, hosting Denver. The game will be broadcast live on 1620 The Zone with Gary Sharp and former Maverick Grant Nieland on the call, and links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.
