OMAHA, Neb. –
Vance Rookwood had two goals, helping the Omaha men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Belmont on Sunday afternoon at Caniglia Field.
The win improved the Mavericks to 2-2-0 on the season while Belmont fell to 0-4-0.
"The 2nd game of a weekend is always a tough challenge physically and mentally," said Omaha head coach
Jason Mims. "I thought our guys played a very mature, experienced match. After last weekend's two gut-wrenching results, I was extremely proud of the guys to battle back and earn two wins."
Rookwood opened the scoring when he tipped home a pass from
Xavier Gomez in the box in the 27th minute.
Jesus Perez also picked up an assist.
Belmont tied the game when Joao Fonseca fired in a feed off a cross from Raphael Colmanette in the 32nd minute.
But Rookwood got loose a little more than three minutes later and scored on a shot to the left corner in the 36th minute.
The Mavericks added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute when
Emir Alihodzic knocked home a corner kick by
Mark Moulton for his first goal of the year.
Joseph Ghitis picked up his first career win with one save as the Mavericks outshot the Bruins 12-3 and 6-2 in shots on goal. UNO also had a 14-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Mavericks will be on the road for the next three games beginning Saturday, Sept. 13 at Kansas City.
