Katie Kesti and
Sophie Peters each shot a round of 77 to lead the Omaha women's golf team on the first day of play at the WIU Autumn Invitational.
The Mavericks posted a team score of 318 over the first 18 holes of the 36-hole event. That puts them eight strokes behind host Western Illinois which leads the five-team tournament.
Kesti had two rounds in the 30s, going out in 38 and coming back in 39. Peters started out with a 40 on the front but came on strong with a one-over-par 37 on the back. Both players are in a tie for fourth overall.
Freshman
Megan Vetrovsky is tied for ninth after shooting 80 on day one, a total that included 39 on the front. Fellow freshman
Katelyn Strudthoff, playing in her first collegiate tournament, carded an 84 to tie for 18th while
Makenna Kroeker shot 89 to tie for 27th.
Alexa Ruwe, playing as an individual, fired a score of 91 to tie for 31st.
The final round will begin Sunday morning at 9 a.m. at the Harry Mussatto Golf Course.
