Omaha Cruises Past Nevada, 78-54

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's basketball team put together a dominant non-conference win on Saturday afternoon, defeating Nevada 78-54 at Ralston Arena. With the win, the Mavericks improved to 3-2 (0-0 Summit League), while the Wolf Pack dropped to 2-4 (0-0 Mountain West).

Freshman forward Tre'Shawn Thurman paced UNO offensively with a season-high 18 points, shooting 6-for-9 from the field and 2-for-2 from long range. The Omaha Central product added three rebounds, five blocks and an assist. His five blocks were the most since Gabe Zweiner tallied five against Nebraska-Kearney on Dec. 3, 2005.

Senior forward Mike Rostampour added 17 points, a team-high five rebounds, a block and a steal. Junior guard Marcus Tyus went 5-for-5 from the field – including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc – to finish with 12 points, and junior guard Devin Patterson totaled 10 points, a career-high nine assists and a season-best five steals. Patterson's assist total was the most since Caleb Steffensmeier had 11 against Fort Wayne on Dec. 10, 2011.

Nevada was led by AJ West's 10 points and seven rebounds, along with two blocks, an assist and a steal.

As a team, Omaha shot .500 (25-of-52) as a team, including .467 (7-of-15) from 3-point range. Nevada was held to a .322 effort (19-for-59) for the game, hitting just six of their 23 shots taken (.261) in the second half. The Wolf Pack outrebounded UNO, 40-30, helped by a 15-5 advantage on the offensive glass.

Omaha trailed the Wolf Pack early, but back-to-back threes by junior guard Tim Smallwood and Rostampour gave the Mavericks their first lead of the day at 14-11 with 11:34 until the break. Nevada played it close, however, knotting the score again at 23-23 on a Tyron Criswell triple with 6:58 on the clock. The score stalled once more at 28-all on a Lucas Stivrins tip-in, and buckets by Marqueze Coleman and West capped a 7-0 Nevada run that put the Wolf Pack up 32-28. Facing the four-point deficit in the closing seconds, Tyus drained a trey at the buzzer to pull the Mavericks within one, 32-31, by halftime.

Thurman starred for the Mavericks in the second half, posting 15 points on 5-for-7 shooting alongside three caroms and two blocked shots. He opened the half with a 3-pointer, then knifed through with a fastbreak layup and knocked down his second triple in a span of the first three minutes, totaling nine points before the first timeout.

Rostampour and Carter then combined for a 10-0 run, which gave Omaha a 54-37 lead with 13:10 left. The Mavericks pushed it out to a 20-point margin on a Patterson layup, and UNO continued to stave off any chance for a Wolf Pack comeback as Nevada made just three of its last 13 shots to finish the game. Omaha took its largest lead of the game when Smallwood hit a three with 1:55 left, and his final free throw with 0:41 remaining brought the final tally to 78-54.

The Mavericks return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 2, traveling to Kansas State. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan, Kan., and the game will be televised live on FOX Sports Kansas City. The game will also be carried live on 1620 The Zone with Gary Sharp on the call, and links to live stats, audio and video will be available on OMavs.com.
