OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's basketball team lost, 72-52, to North Dakota on Wednesday afternoon at Sapp Fieldhouse.
The Mavericks dropped to 2-2 overall, while North Dakota improved to 4-1.
Mikaela Shaw had a game high 19 points and nine rebounds for the Mavs. Lanese Bough added eight points and three assists. Remy Davenport chipped in six points, five rebounds, and five steals.
Omaha's Mikaela Shaw hit a jumper to cut North Dakota's early lead to 4-2 at the 18:06 mark in the first half. The Mavericks did not have another field goal until Remy Davenport drained a three-pointer with 7:31 left in the half to make the score 15-6. North Dakota went on a 17-10 run to end the half. The Mavs committed 10 turnovers in the first half and shot just 16.1 percent (5-for-31) from the field while going 2-for-10 from 3-point range, as UND built a 32-16 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Mavs were down 39-18 before responding with a 10-2 run to get within 43-30 at the 11:54 mark. That was as close as Omaha could close the gap. North Dakota went back up by 23 with 4:03 remaining in the game. Mikaela Shaw scored a pair of buckets and hit two free throws to cut the lead to 17 points with under a minute remaining, but Omaha could not get any closer. The final score was 72-52.
Omaha shot 29.2 percent (19-of-65) from the floor and just 15 percent (3-of-20) from beyond the three point line. The Mavs connected on 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from the free throw line. UND hit 45.2 percent (28-of-62) from the field and 42.9 (6-of-14) percent from the three point line. North Dakota went 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from the free throw line.
The Omaha defense forced North Dakota into a season high 22 turnovers and blocked seven shots.
The Mavs return to action on Friday, Nov. 28 against Northern Colorado. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Sapp Fieldhouse.
